Sound is Vibrations!

Squawking Chickens!
Students made a crowing chicken sound by pulling on a string to set up a vibration.  They discovered how to make the different chicken sounds by moving the sponge at different speeds.

Slinky Sound
Students investigated sound further by discovering that sound can travel through solids.  They used cups and different sized Slinky's to hear vibrating sounds.

Contraction Surgery

During our study of contractions, my students performed Word Surgery.  First we dressed the part with our masks and gloves.  They gathered tools such as scalpel (scissors), stitches (tape), and bandages (Band-Aids).  Each team assisted each other during surgery.  They cut off the letters they didn't need and bandaged them back together with Band-Aids and tape.  I wanted them to always remember how to form a contraction.  They had a lot of fun doing it.  They were very excited to take home their surgery gear.  I even overhead one of my students saying they were going to make their own word cards and try it again at home!

Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday

We celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday by reading "Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King, Jr.", creating a directed art project and writing about his special life.  Here are the results of my creative and hard-working class!

Community Workers

In Social Studies we are currently studying community workers.  We are also learning about different places that provide our community with goods and services.  As a take-home project students made a list of people who provide our community with goods and services.  Then, they chose 1 job they would like to have a created dressed a paper version of themselves.  Finally they designed a business card for their person.
