Sound is Vibrations!

Squawking Chickens!
Students made a crowing chicken sound by pulling on a string to set up a vibration.  They discovered how to make the different chicken sounds by moving the sponge at different speeds.

Slinky Sound
Students investigated sound further by discovering that sound can travel through solids.  They used cups and different sized Slinky's to hear vibrating sounds.

  1. HI!
I love this idea. I'm curious, did you just attach string, punch a hole in the cup or glue it in? Looks like loads of fun!

  2. It is an aims activity. Poke a hole in the cup. Attach/tie the string to a paper clip on the top of the cup and toe it to a sponge under the cup. Slightly damp the sponge. Then squeeze the sponge down the string to make the sounds. It's fun to use different size cups to hear different sounds.

  3. I really like this idea! I wonder how you keep the sponge on the string though. Does the paper clip go through the hole in the top of the cup? Does the string go through the middle of the sponge? Thanks
